Women’s Learning Partnership participated in the United Nations 62nd Commission on the Status of Women in New York City during March 2018. Afkhami spoke at the “Human Rights Defenders: A Panel with Female Advocates” co-hosted by Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights and UN Watch.
TPC is Women’s Learning Partnership’s annual convening of its member organizations to share best practices, strategize for future successes and build solidarity across the global women’s movement. WLP founder and President Mahnaz Afkhami opened this year’s TPC on October 7, 2017.
Afkhami spoke at an event co-hosted by by the Alliance for Peacebuilding’s Women and Peacebuilding Affinity Group, The United Nations Association of the National Capital Area and The National Capital Chapter of the U.S. National Committee for UN Women on highlights from the 60th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women on March 30, 2016.
On September 14, 2015, Mahnaz Afkhami gave opening remarks at Women’s Learning Partnership’s conference “The World We Seek: Reigniting the Dialogue on Human Security” at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, DC.
On July 16, Afkhami spoke at the launch event for the book Women and Girls Rising: Progress and Resistance Around the World at the Embassy of New Zealand in Washington, DC. The launch was hosted by the Roosevelt Institute and Center for Health and Gender Equity (CHANGE). The book was developed out of the Women and Girls Rising Conference: Historical Reflections and Future Prospects hosted by the Roosevelt Institute at the September 11-12, 2014.
On March 8, 2015, Mahnaz Afkhami was a featured speaker in the Opening Ceremony at the NGO CSW Forum Consultation Day event “Celebrate the Feminist and Women’s Movements 1975-2015.”
On September 11, Mahnaz Afkhami spoke at the Women and Girls Rising: Historical Reflections & Future Prospects Conference on the panel “How Global Conferences Have Mattered to Realizing Women’s Human Rights” The conference was organized around conversations between at least two speakers, pairing activists with scholars, women and men of the Global South with those of the North, and pioneers of the past with their activist counterparts today. Women and Girls Rising intends to ground today’s policy solutions in the history of visionaries who first recognized that women’s rights are fundamental human rights, and human rights are the right of every woman.
On March 31, Women’s Foreign Policy Group’s “Beyond the Headlines” series featured Mahnaz Afkhami speaking on the highlights of the 58th session of the Commission on the Status of Women where representatives of UN member states, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited NGOs met at UN headquarters in New York. This year’s discussion focused on the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls.
