Mahnaz Afkhami spoke on two panels at the 2012 Iranian-American Women Leadership Conference. “Women’s Development and Empowerment” featured Afkhami, Parvaneh Bahar, Farzaneh Milani, Fatemeh Moghadam and Valentine Moghadam who spoke on developing the motivation to overcome obstacles and fulfill one’s potential. Afkhami also spoke about impactful writing along with fellow authors on the panel entitled “Write On! Women and the Power of Word” with Haleh Esfandiari, Alexandra Monir, Najmieh Batmanglij and Gina Nahai.

During the luncheon plenary Afkhami discussed a story from her book Women in Exile about 13 activist women’s flight from oppression including her sister’s flight from oppression in Iran and her subsequent life in exile.
