Leading to Choices is based on a conceptualization of leadership as horizontal, inclusive, and participatory. The handbook includes a flexible curriculum that may be adapted and customized to suit the diverse cultural, political and socio-economic needs of women and men around the world. At the heart of each workshop session is a case study or scenario depicting individuals who discovered personal leadership skills that enabled them to address a challenging situation in their community.
Leading to Choices has been used in interactive leadership training workshops with thousands of participants in more than 25 countries in the Global South. Participants have included women, young girls, and men; Muslims and Christians; and human rights activists, academics, university students, women NGO representatives, factory workers, refugees, politician, domestic workers, and indigenous women, among others.
An introductory chapter titled The Building Blocks of Leadership: Leadership as Communicative Learning is available online.
